A Brief History

Transylvania County was carved from neighboring counties in 1861. Its name means “Across the Woods” — a fitting title for a county defined by deep forests and clear rivers. Early settlers relied on agriculture, timber, and small-scale industry.

In the 20th century, Transylvania grew as a cultural and educational hub, home to institutions such as Brevard College and the renowned Brevard Music Center. The surrounding Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Recreational Forest made the area a haven for hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers.
